Alpine, landlocked Austria was the epicentre of the immensely powerful Hapsburg dynasty for 600 years, and it still shows. Medieval-flavoured Salzburg, despite being the birthplace of Mozart and home to one of the world's greatest classical festivals, may be best known as the setting for the Sound of Music. And on the natural front, Austria is cut by Europe's greatest and most beautiful river, the Danube, while the over half the country is covered by the Alps, and offers legendary hiking and skiing.
