Spitsbergen Cruises & Polar Bear Viewing

Experience an adventure cruise to the remote island of Spitsbergen and voyage into the land of the polar bear. High in the Arctic, Spitsbergen is an island within the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago that is ensnared in ice during much of the year. However, as summer approaches, the ice gives way to scenic fjords and stunning scenery frequented by the world's largest land carnivore - the polar bear!

Birders and nature enthusiasts will enjoy what seems like endless hours of wildlife spotting opportunities, while history buffs will be intrigued by the numerous research bases and the history of the island's capital, Longyearbyen.

Above the Arctic Circle, these voyages are pure expeditions, where weather and wildlife dictate the route for the coming day. With the possibility of circumnavigating Spitsbergen and reaching 80 degrees north latitude, you'll experience parts of the world seen by only a select group of people.

The History of Spitsbergen

This extreme part of the world has challenged whalers and adventurers for centuries. On our daily excursions, the Expedition team will help bring history to life by pointing out old cemeteries or settlements where whalers or explorers once lived. One popular, historic site is the Fjord of grief (Sorgfjord), where the French and Dutch battled in 1693. Sites of historic importance will also be featured during onboard Expedition talks, where our crew will chat about anything from the history of whaling in Spitsbergen to continental drift and plate tectonics.

Spitsbergen & Arctic Wildlife

Well, the nature of a Polar Expedition travel means every voyage is different and there are never any guarantees. But with knowledge of some superior "beary areas" and fantastic fjords, our expedition team will get you up close to many of the Arctic's elusive and inquisitive creatures.

Polar Bears - they're so cute, but don't be fooled by these mean, lean meat-eating machines. Pure power and the pinnacle of predators in the Arctic, every voyages' highlight is watching these bears roam free.

Walrus - quizzically odd-looking with their big tusks, these animals are a keystone species in the Arctic, meaning they have a huge impact on the overall ecosystem.

Reindeer - have you ever wondered where Reindeer really live? Well, on Spitsberen island of course!

Muskox - not native to this part of the Arctic, these shaggy, musky smelling mammals are still one of those special Arctic encounters.

Arctic Fox and Arctic Hare - keen eyesight and a bit of luck will land you a sighting or either of these Arctic residents who each seek out a living in the harsh coastal climate of Spitsbergen.

Seals - there are seals-a-plenty in this part of the Arctic. Inquisitive by nature, you'll most likely see Bearded Seals and Ringed Seals, while a bit of luck may be needed for close encounters with Hooded, Harp or Harbour Seals.

Whales - the Arctic Ocean is home to perhaps the most visually appealing array of Whales. Majestic Blue Whales may suface off the bow of the ship, while graceful Orca pods (Killer Whales) may be spotted the next day. While many species stick to open waters away form our coastal routes, Belugas, Narwhals, Pilot, Fin, Minke, Bowhead and Sperm Whales also call this area home during part of the year.

Dolphins & Porpoises - there are two species to be on the lookout for - the Harbour Porpoise and the White-Beaked Dolphin.

Birdlife - the lengthy list of marine birds to be encountered far exceed the mammal list. Gulls, Skuas, Plovers, Divers and Terns seem to be around each new fjord. Some Arctic specialties like Puffins, Snow Buntings and Snowy Owls will also keep you busy with the binoculars. Most voyages log more than 30 species of birds on their chart!
