Day 2 Oaxaca
Travel on one of Mexico's comfortable buses to the colonial city of Oaxaca, a colourful city with lively markets and great food! Oaxaca has an incredible history and will be our focal point in learning about the cultures and traditions of the local people, especially the significance of the Day of the Dead celebration which we will see here in a few days time.
Day 3-4 Puerto Escondido
Take a flight over the mountains of the Sierra Madre del Sur to the Pacific coastal town of Puerto Escondido, famed for its waves that attract surfers from around the world. Visit the many nearby beaches for surfing, swimming, fishing, or perhaps explore a nearby lagoon to observe mangrove marine birds and other wildlife.
Day 5-6 Mazunte
Travel the short distance to Mazunte, home of the Mexican Centre for the Turtle. In the past, this town made its living harvesting sea turtles and their eggs, but in light of the turtles’ endangered status, they have changed their focus into more ecologically-friendly projects. Set on a bay, this town is perfect for swimming and relaxation. A visit to the Mexican Centre for the Turtle is included.
Day 7-10 Oaxaca
We make our way back to Oaxaca on a short flight in time to see the city preparing for its famous Day of the Dead celebration. Enjoy a cultural city tour with a stop at the market to watch families stock up on goods to decorate their graveyard altars. Also included is a cemetery visit to observe Mexican families as they eat, dance and celebrate the return of their loved ones. After, explore the nearby ruins of Monte Albán or Mitla, or visit one of many artisan communities to see locals weaving, making mescal or creating beautiful black pottery goods.
